Objective
Students will be able to define a domain word precisely and distinguish it from a near neighbour.

The lesson
Warm-up — nearly the same
5 min- Give three pairs of technical terms that are often confused.
- Ask what separates each pair.
Teach — define against the neighbour
13 min- Define one technical term from the text.
- Bring in its near neighbour and define that.
- Say what separates them in one clause.
- Show a sentence where swapping the two changes the meaning.
- Say why this matters: subject vocabulary is a system, and each word is defined against the others.

Guided practice — three pairs
12 min- Pairs define three term pairs from the text.
- For each they write the distinguishing clause.
- They write one sentence using each term correctly.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Defines two related terms identically.
Why: They overlap heavily and the overlap is what is remembered.
Fix: The distinguishing clause, always. If it cannot be written, they have not been separated.
Uses the everyday sense of a technical word.
Why: The everyday meaning came first.
Fix: Name both senses. Awareness of the pair prevents the slip.
Recites a definition without being able to apply it.
Why: The definition was the question.
Fix: The new sentence, always. Application is the test.
If they are not there yet
- One pair rather than three.
- Give one definition.
If they finish early
- Find a third term in the same family.
- Find a text that uses two terms interchangeably and say whether it should.
- Write a definition for a reader who knows neither term.

What to look for: A real distinguishing clause. Two identical definitions mean the against-the-neighbour method needs modelling.
