The lesson
Warm-up — mark the phrases
5 min- Read one sentence with slashes at the phrase breaks.
- Read it again with the slashes in the wrong places. It stops making sense.
Teach — the context catches it
13 min- Read a paragraph and misread a word into another real word.
- Carry on to the end of the sentence, then stop.
- Say what did not fit — not the word, the meaning.
- Go back and correct it.
- Say the point: the meaning is the checker. A misread word that still makes sense is much harder to catch, which is why you read for sense.

Guided practice — mark then read
12 min- Pairs mark phrase breaks on the passage before reading.
- They read to each other, one paragraph each.
- The listener notes each self-correction and what triggered it.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete the fluency page.
- It marks phrasing and identifies misreads that context would catch.

2 min- Read a sentence with one word wrong. Take the correction and the reason.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Reads word by word at a steady pace.
Why: Every word is being decoded separately and none is being grouped.
Fix: Mark the phrase breaks before reading. Reading to a slash is a different task from reading to a space.
Corrects a word only when it is not a real word.
Why: A real word feels like a successful decode.
Fix: Ask whether the sentence made sense. Real-word errors are the ones worth catching.
Adds expression that does not match the meaning.
Why: Expression is being performed rather than read.
Fix: Ask what the character felt at that line. The expression follows from the answer.
