Objective
Students will be able to answer a question about an information text by pointing to the part that tells them.
Students are successful when they can
- Answers a question about a fact just read.
- Turns back to the page rather than guessing.
- Says whether the book actually answered the question.
What you need
- A short information book with clear photographs
- Sticky notes
- The printable practice sheet linked at the end of this plan
The lesson
Warm-up — what do you already think you know?
4 min- Show the cover — bees, say. Ask what they already believe about bees.
- Write three of the claims on sticky notes. Do not judge them.
- Say the book will tell us which are true.
Teach — the book decides, not us
10 min- Read the book straight through.
- Go back to the sticky notes one at a time. For each, ask: did the book say that?
- Turn to the page when it did. Say clearly when it did not.
- Ask a new question the book does answer, and find the page together.
- Ask one it does not answer. Say so, and say where you would look instead.
“It might be true. But this book did not say it, so we cannot use this book to prove it.”
Guided practice — find the page
8 min- Ask four questions the book answers. Pairs find the page.
- They show you the page rather than telling you the answer.
Independent practice
6 min- Students complete the fact questions page.
- The text is on the sheet. Read it aloud twice.
Close
2 min- Ask one thing they now know that they did not know this morning.
- Ask which page told them.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Answers from what they already believed rather than from the book.
Why: The child came in with the belief and the book did not contradict it loudly enough to displace it.
Fix: Use the sticky notes. Making the prior belief visible before reading is what lets it be tested afterwards.
Treats every question as answerable by the book.
Why: Books are authoritative, so if it was asked, the book must know.
Fix: Ask an unanswerable question deliberately, every session, and say plainly that this book does not tell us.
Points to a photograph rather than to the words.
Why: The photograph is where the information looks like it is.
Fix: Accept it, then ask what the words next to it say. The photograph is evidence too, but the words are what was read.
If they are not there yet
- Ask about the double page in front of them rather than the whole book.
- Give two answers and ask which the book supports.
If they finish early
- Ask a question whose answer needs two pages.
- Ask what else they would want the book to have told them.
- Ask where they would look to answer a question this book did not.
Exit ticket
Tell me one fact from the book. Show me the page it came from.
What to look for: A true fact with the wrong page is a fact they already knew. That is the answer this lesson exists to catch.
