Objective
Students will be able to read a passage aloud with expression and go back when a sentence stops making sense.
Students are successful when they can
- Reads at a rate a listener can follow.
- Changes voice at punctuation and at dialogue.
- Stops and rereads when meaning breaks.

The lesson
Warm-up — three ways
5 min- Read one sentence flat, then too fast, then well.
- Ask what the third one had that the others did not.
Teach — the going-back move
13 min- Read a paragraph aloud and make a real error that changes the meaning.
- Carry on for two words, then stop. Say aloud: 'that did not make sense'.
- Go back to the start of the sentence and read it again correctly.
- Say that the going-back is the skill, not the error.
- Then read the dialogue twice — once flat, once in the characters' voices — and ask which told them more.
“You are allowed to go back. Good readers do it several times a page.”
Guided practice — read and mark
12 min- Pairs read the passage to each other, once each.
- The listener marks every place the reader went back. Marks are good news.
- Second reading: the same passage, aiming for expression rather than speed.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete the fluency page.
- It marks phrases and asks which voice each line takes.
Close
2 min- One student reads a line of dialogue twice, in two different voices.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Reads fast because fast sounds fluent.
Why: Speed is the most measurable thing about reading aloud and gets noticed.
Fix: Have the partner retell it after. If they cannot, the speed cost more than it bought.
Reads on after an error that broke the sense.
Why: Stopping feels like failing, and the page keeps going.
Fix: Count the going-backs as a positive on the partner's sheet. What is counted gets done.
Uses the same voice for narration and dialogue.
Why: The words look the same on the page.
Fix: Mark the speech marks in colour first. Once the boundary is visible, the voice change follows.
If they are not there yet
- Read after a model, one sentence at a time.
- A passage with two speakers only.
If they finish early
- Read a passage with three speakers, distinguishing all three.
- Read a paragraph with no punctuation and say where it should go.
- Record and listen back, then read it again.

What to look for: At least one deliberate correction. No going-backs at speed usually means errors were passed over, not avoided.
