Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text.
Objective
Students will be able to describe how two steps, events or ideas in a text are connected.
Students are successful when they can
- Names both items.
- States the connection in a sentence.
- Says what would happen if the order changed.

The lesson
Warm-up — swap two steps
5 min- Read a five-step procedure with two steps swapped.
- The class finds the swap and says why it breaks.
Teach — three kinds of chain
13 min- Do the procedure text: steps in order, each needed for the next.
- Do the history text: events in time, connected by cause.
- Do the science text: an idea and what follows from it.
- For each, take one pair and say the connection in a sentence.
- Ask what changes if the order reverses. In a procedure it breaks; in history it is impossible.

Guided practice — one of each
12 min- Pairs build a sequence strip for each of the three texts.
- They write one connection sentence per text.
- They say which text's order matters most.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete the connections page.
- The passages are on the sheet.

2 min- Give two steps out of order. Take the fix and the reason.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says two things are connected because they are near each other.
Why: Proximity on a page reads as relationship.
Fix: The removal test: take the first away and ask whether the second still happens.
Treats a list as a sequence.
Why: Both are numbered or bulleted and look the same.
Fix: Try reordering. A list survives it; a sequence does not.
Explains a scientific idea as a story of events.
Why: Narrative is the structure they know best.
Fix: Ask whether it happened once or happens every time. Ideas recur; events do not.
If they are not there yet
- One text type rather than three.
- Give the two items and collect the connection.
If they finish early
- Find two steps whose order does not matter.
- Add a missing step to a procedure.
- Connect an event in one text to an idea in another.
