Objective
Students will be able to compare two three-digit numbers by place value and record the comparison with >, = or <.
Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up — name the place
5 min- Say a three-digit number and ask for the value of a named digit — not the digit, the value.
- In 483, the 8 is worth eighty. That distinction is the lesson in miniature.
Teach — stop at the first difference
13 min- Build 423 and 386 with base ten materials. Ask which is greater.
- Four hundreds beats three hundreds. The tens and ones were never needed, and saying that explicitly matters.
- Now 423 and 456. Hundreds match, so move right. Two tens against five tens decides it.
- Now 423 and 427. Hundreds match, tens match, ones decide.
- State the procedure: start on the left, move right, stop at the first place where they differ.
- Do one where the numbers have different lengths — 98 and 132 — and note that a three-digit number always beats a two-digit one.

Guided practice — build and decide
12 min- Pairs draw six digit cards to make two three-digit numbers and compare them.
- They must say which place decided it before writing the symbol.
- Deal some rounds where the hundreds match, so the procedure has to run further than one step.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a comparing numbers page.
- Pairs with matching hundreds are the ones to mark closely. The rest can be answered from the first digit alone.

3 min- Write 508 and 580 and ask which is greater and which place decided.
- The zero in the tens is the interesting part and worth the last minute.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says 98 is greater than 132 because it has a 9 in it.
Why: The largest digit is being taken as a proxy for the largest number, which works surprisingly often on same-length pairs.
Fix: Build both. One hundred flat settles it before any digit is looked at, and the number of digits becomes the first thing to check.
Compares all three places and gets confused when two agree and one does not.
Why: The places are being treated as equally important and the results have to be combined somehow.
Fix: Stop at the first difference and say so out loud. Once a place has decided, the rest is not evidence.
Reads 508 as fifty-eight and compares accordingly.
Why: The zero is being skipped in reading, which collapses the number by a whole place.
Fix: Build 508 with five flats and eight units and ask how many rods. None — and the zero is what records that.
If they are not there yet
- Compare numbers with different hundreds only, then introduce matching hundreds once the left-to-right habit is set.
- Use a place value chart so the digits line up vertically and the comparison is column by column.
If they finish early
- Order five three-digit numbers.
- Find the greatest and least three-digit numbers that can be made from three given digits.
- Compare four-digit numbers with the same procedure and check it still works.

Write > or <: 604 __ 640. Then say which place decided it.
What to look for: < and the tens place. A pupil who says the ones place decided has run the whole comparison instead of stopping at the first difference.
