The lesson
Warm-up — bigger or smaller?
6 min- Ask whether 3 km in metres will be a bigger or smaller number. Then 4,000 g in kilograms.
- Only the direction, not the answer. The direction is what most conversion errors get wrong.
Teach — smaller unit, bigger number
15 min- State the principle: the smaller the unit, the more of them you need, so the number goes up.
- Convert 3 km to metres: metres are smaller, so more of them. 3 × 1,000 = 3,000 m.
- Convert 4,000 g to kilograms: kilograms are bigger, so fewer of them. 4,000 ÷ 1,000 = 4 kg.
- Do 2.5 litres to millilitres and 750 ml to litres, so decimals appear in both directions.
- Now a multi-step problem: a recipe needs 350 ml four times; the bottle holds 1.5 litres. Is it enough?
- Convert first, then compare: 1,400 ml against 1,500 ml. Yes, just.

Guided practice — direction first
14 min- Pairs write 'bigger' or 'smaller' beside each conversion before doing it.
- They then convert and check the answer matches their prediction.
- Finally they solve two multi-step problems, converting before calculating.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a conversions page.
- Answers a factor of a thousand out in the wrong direction are the diagnostic, and the prediction step would have caught them.

3 min- Convert 0.75 km to metres and ask for the direction first.
- Bigger number, 750 m. The direction, then the arithmetic.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Converts 3 km to metres as 0.003 m.
Why: The multiplication and division have been chosen by habit or by the position of the numbers rather than by thinking about unit size.
Fix: Predict the direction before converting. Three kilometres is clearly more than three metres, so the number must grow.
Converts between units by moving the decimal point without knowing which way.
Why: A shortcut has been learned without the reasoning behind it, so the direction is a coin flip.
Fix: Reason from the unit sizes every time, and let the decimal shortcut be a consequence rather than the method.
In a multi-step problem, converts at the end rather than the start.
Why: The calculation has been done in mixed units and the conversion treated as a final tidying step.
Fix: Convert everything to one unit before any calculation. Making it the first written line stops mixed-unit arithmetic happening at all.
If they are not there yet
- Work with one measure at a time and conversions involving 1,000 only.
- Provide a conversion reference and require the direction to be written before each answer.
If they finish early
- Convert between units two steps apart, such as millimetres to metres.
- Solve a problem requiring conversion of both time and distance.
- Compare quantities given in three different units.
