The lesson
Warm-up — fold and check
6 min- Fold a paper square in half four different ways and check each fold matches exactly.
- Four lines of symmetry, found by testing rather than by looking.
Teach — the fold is the test
15 min- State the definition: a line of symmetry is a fold where both halves land exactly on each other.
- Fold a rectangle. Two lines work — horizontal and vertical. Try the diagonal and watch it fail.
- Ask why the diagonal fails when it looks like it should work. The halves are the same size but they do not land on each other.
- Do an equilateral triangle: three lines. A regular pentagon: five. Ask for the pattern.
- Now a parallelogram. It looks balanced and has no lines of symmetry at all. Fold every candidate and watch them all fail.
- Finish with a mirror on a fold line, so the reflection can be seen as well as tested.
“It does not matter what it looks like. Fold it. If the two halves do not land on each other exactly, it is not a line of symmetry.”
Guided practice — find them all
14 min- Pairs find every line of symmetry for a set of shapes by folding, and record the number.
- They then predict the number for a regular octagon before testing.
- Finally they complete a half-drawn shape on squared paper so it is symmetrical.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a symmetry page.
- Diagonals marked on rectangles are the diagnostic error and are extremely common.
Close
3 min- Show a parallelogram and ask how many lines of symmetry.
- None. The surprise is the point, and it will need repeating.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Draws the diagonals of a rectangle as lines of symmetry.
Why: The diagonal cuts the rectangle into two congruent triangles, which looks like the definition. The halves match in area but not in position.
Fix: Fold it. The two triangles do not land on each other, and one fold ends the argument.
Says a parallelogram has two lines of symmetry.
Why: It has rotational symmetry and a strong visual balance, which is being read as reflective symmetry.
Fix: Fold every candidate. All of them fail. Then rotate it 180 degrees to show what kind of symmetry it does have.
Finds one line of symmetry and stops.
Why: The task has been read as finding a line rather than all of them.
Fix: Ask for a number, not a line. 'How many' forces a complete search in a way that 'find the line of symmetry' does not.
If they are not there yet
- Fold every shape physically. Judging symmetry by eye is exactly the skill that is failing.
- Use a mirror on the proposed line so the match can be seen directly.
If they finish early
- Predict the number of lines of symmetry for a regular polygon with n sides.
- Find the lines of symmetry in capital letters.
- Draw a shape with exactly two lines of symmetry that is not a rectangle.

What to look for: Two, drawn horizontally and vertically, and none. Diagonals drawn on the rectangle mean the folding test was not applied.
