The lesson
Warm-up — how does it end?
6 min- Draw a segment, a ray and a line on the board with arrows where appropriate.
- Ask what is different. Two ends, one end, no ends. The arrows are doing real work.
Teach — the words, then the shapes
15 min- Define each: a point has no size, a segment joins two points, a ray starts at a point and goes on, a line goes on both ways.
- Draw an angle as two rays from a shared endpoint. The vertex is the shared point.
- Lay two straws parallel and ask what would happen if they were extended forever. They never meet.
- Now perpendicular: two straws crossing at a right angle. Check with the corner of a set square.
- Take a rectangle. Find the two pairs of parallel sides and the four perpendicular meetings.
- Take a trapezium. One pair of parallel sides and no perpendicular ones, which is why it is a different shape.
“Parallel means they never meet however far you extend them. Perpendicular means they meet at a right angle. Both are about the lines, not about the shape they happen to be in.”
Guided practice — find them in the shape
14 min- Pairs mark parallel sides and right angles on a set of shape cards.
- They check every right angle with a set square rather than by eye.
- Then they draw a shape to order: four sides, one pair of parallel sides, exactly two right angles.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a lines and angles page.
- Sides called parallel because they look similar in length are the error to watch for.
Close
3 min- Show a rhombus and ask for parallel sides and right angles.
- Two pairs parallel, no right angles. Being clear that these are separate properties is the point.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says two sides of equal length are parallel.
Why: Equal and parallel often occur together in the shapes met so far, so the two properties have not been separated.
Fix: Show an isosceles triangle. Two equal sides that clearly meet, so equal cannot mean parallel.
Says two lines are parallel because they do not cross within the drawing.
Why: The drawing is finite and the definition is about infinite extension, which is not visible on the page.
Fix: Extend both lines with a ruler to the edge of the paper. If they are converging they will meet, and the extension shows it.
Uses 'line' for a line segment throughout.
Why: In everyday speech a line is any straight mark. The distinction is a mathematical convention with no everyday counterpart.
Fix: Insist on the arrows when drawing. Drawing the distinction is what makes it stick, more than defining it.
If they are not there yet
- Work with parallel and perpendicular in rectangles and squares first, where both are easy to see.
- Use a set square for every right angle rather than judging by eye.
If they finish early
- Find parallel and perpendicular lines in a regular hexagon.
- Draw a quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides and one right angle.
- Identify the lines and angles in a real object such as a window frame.

Three, each a reasoning error rather than carelessness: says two sides of equal length are parallel; says two lines are parallel because they do not cross within the drawing and uses 'line' for a line segment throughout. The plan gives the thinking behind each one and the teaching move that addresses the thinking rather than the symptom.
How do I know whether the lesson worked?
The exit ticket asks: “In this trapezium, mark the parallel sides and any right angles. What is the difference between a ray and a line segment?.” One pair of parallel sides marked, and a ray having one endpoint against a segment having two.
