The lesson
Warm-up — estimate the product
6 min- Give four calculations and take only estimates by rounding both factors.
- These get written down and checked against later.
Teach — every line is a partial product
15 min- Work 346 × 27 with an area model first: six boxes, from 300 × 20 down to 6 × 7.
- Now do it in columns. The first line is 346 × 7 and the second is 346 × 20.
- Match each column line to the boxes it combines. The second line is three boxes added, not a mystery.
- Explain the placeholder zero: the second line multiplies by 20, not by 2, so it starts one place to the left.
- Add the two lines: 2,422 and 6,920, giving 9,342.
- Check against the estimate: 350 × 30 is about 10,500. The answer is in the right region.

Guided practice — estimate, calculate, check
14 min- Pairs estimate, calculate with the standard method, then compare.
- For one calculation each they also draw the area model and match the lines.
- Any answer more than about a fifth away from the estimate gets rechecked before moving on.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a multiplication page.
- A missing placeholder zero gives an answer about a tenth of what it should be, and the estimate catches it.

3 min- Give 218 × 43 and ask only for the estimate and how many lines the working will have.
- About 8,800, and two lines. Planning the shape of the answer is the habit.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Omits the placeholder zero on the second line.
Why: The tens digit is being treated as a single digit because that is what it looks like on the page.
Fix: Match the line to the area model. It is 346 × 20, and writing 20 explicitly for a few calculations makes the zero necessary rather than remembered.
Carries into the wrong column, or reuses a carry from the previous line.
Why: The carried digits from the first line are still written above when the second line starts.
Fix: Cross out the carries after each line is complete. A clean top row for each partial product removes the interference.
Produces an answer of the wrong magnitude and does not query it.
Why: There is no estimate for the answer to contradict, so nothing flags it.
Fix: Box the estimate before calculating. An answer outside the box is an event that requires a response.
If they are not there yet
- Use the area model as the main method and the column layout as a comparison, until the partial products are secure.
- Multiply by a one-digit number until that is fluent, then two.
If they finish early
- Multiply a four-digit number by a two-digit number.
- Find the error in a worked calculation with a misplaced partial product.
- Multiply three numbers, choosing an efficient order.
