Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up — turn and name
4 min- Hold up a square tile and name it. Then rotate it 45 degrees and ask again.
- Take the answers, including 'diamond', without correcting yet.
Teach — nothing changed but the angle
9 min- Hold the tilted tile still and count its sides — four. Count its corners — four. Ask if all sides are the same length. They are.
- Turn it back upright and check the same three things. Nothing changed.
- Say it directly: it was a square before you turned it, and turning your hand cannot change what it is.
- Do the same with a triangle pointed downwards, and a rectangle stood on its short end.
- Trace one shape at four different angles on the board and label all four with the same name.

Guided practice — turn it and test it
8 min- Pairs take a shape card in an odd orientation, name it, then check by counting sides and corners.
- They physically rotate the matching tile to upright to confirm.
- Ask for the reason each time. 'Because it has four equal sides' beats 'because it looks like one'.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a turned-shapes page.
- The tilted square and the upside-down triangle are the diagnostic items. Everything else is revision.
Close
3 min- Show a large triangle and a tiny one and ask if both are triangles.
- Size joins orientation on the list of things that do not matter, and that is the sentence to end on.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Calls a rotated square a diamond.
Why: Every square met so far has sat flat on its base, so 'flat on the bottom' has been absorbed into the definition. The word diamond is also genuinely used this way outside school.
Fix: Rotate a real tile slowly in front of them and ask at which exact moment it stopped being a square. There is no such moment, and the child usually says so themselves.
Refuses a triangle that points downwards.
Why: The prototype triangle sits on a horizontal base with a point at the top, and everything else is measured against that picture.
Fix: Count the sides and corners on both. Three and three, either way up. The count is the definition and it does not care about the angle.
Names shapes correctly upright but not on a tilted worksheet.
Why: The shape is being matched against a remembered picture rather than checked against a definition.
Fix: Teach the checking routine — count sides, count corners, check equal — as a habit. It is slower than recognition and it works in every orientation.
If they are not there yet
- Use physical tiles that can be turned rather than pictures. Being able to rotate it back is what makes the argument convincing.
- Work with squares and triangles only, which are the two that cause almost all the trouble.
If they finish early
- Sort a mixed pile of tilted shapes by number of sides rather than by name.
- Draw the same shape three times at three different angles.
- Ask whether a rectangle turned on its end is still a rectangle, and whether a square is also a rectangle.
