Recognising Shapes by Attributes is a free 45-minute Grade 2 maths lesson plan for Common Core standard 2.G.A.1 — recognise and draw shapes by their number of sides and angles. Objective
Students will be able to identify and draw shapes given a number of sides, angles or equal faces.
Students are successful when they can
- Names triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons and hexagons by side count.
- Draws a shape to a stated attribute.
- Counts the faces of a cube and a rectangular prism.

The lesson
Warm-up — count and name
5 min- Show shapes one at a time; class counts sides and names them.
- Include an irregular pentagon, which nobody will recognise and everybody can count.
Teach — the count is the name
13 min- Build a list on the board: 3 sides triangle, 4 quadrilateral, 5 pentagon, 6 hexagon.
- Show an irregular five-sided shape. It is a pentagon, and it looks nothing like the regular one.
- Draw two different quadrilaterals with the class and note both are quadrilaterals despite looking unrelated.
- Point out the angle count always matches the side count, and ask why. Each corner is where two sides meet.
- Move to solids: count the faces of a cube — six — and of a rectangular prism, also six.
- Ask what makes them different if the face count is the same. The faces of the cube are all equal squares.

Guided practice — draw to the rule
12 min- Give each pair an attribute — four sides and exactly one square corner — and ask them to build it on a geoboard.
- They then build a second shape meeting the same rule that looks different from the first.
- Ask each pair to name their shapes by side count.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a shapes page.
- Irregular shapes are the diagnostic items. Regular ones can be recognised without counting anything.

3 min- Draw a lopsided six-sided shape and ask for its name.
- Hexagon, from the count and nothing else.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says an irregular pentagon is 'not a real pentagon'.
Why: The prototype pentagon is regular, and the definition has quietly absorbed the equal sides that only regular examples have.
Fix: Count the sides on both. Five and five. The count is the definition and equal sides are an extra property some pentagons happen to have.
Counts the sides of a shape and gets one too many or too few.
Why: There is no marked starting point, so the first side is counted twice or missed. The same problem as counting objects in a circle.
Fix: Mark the starting corner with a finger before beginning. The rule transfers directly from counting objects and pupils recognise it.
Says a cube and a rectangular prism are the same because both have six faces.
Why: One attribute has been checked and found to match, and no other test has been applied.
Fix: Ask about the faces themselves. Six equal squares against six rectangles. The count is necessary and not sufficient, which is worth saying explicitly.
If they are not there yet
- Work with regular shapes until the names are secure, then introduce irregular examples one at a time.
- Let pupils trace round the shape with a finger while counting so each side is touched once.
If they finish early
- Draw a quadrilateral with no right angles and no equal sides.
- Count the edges and vertices of a cube as well as the faces.
- Sort a mixed set of shapes by side count and then by whether they have a right angle.
Exit ticket
Draw a shape with 5 sides. Then say how many angles it has.
What to look for: Any pentagon, regular or not, with 5 angles. A pupil who draws a regular pentagon carefully and cannot say the angle count has the picture without the structure.

What mistakes should I expect in this lesson?
Three, each a reasoning error rather than carelessness: says an irregular pentagon is 'not a real pentagon'; counts the sides of a shape and gets one too many or too few and says a cube and a rectangular prism are the same because both have six faces. The plan gives the thinking behind each one and the teaching move that addresses the thinking rather than the symptom.
How do I know whether the lesson worked?
The exit ticket asks: “Draw a shape with 5 sides. Then say how many angles it has.” Any pentagon, regular or not, with 5 angles. A pupil who draws a regular pentagon carefully and cannot say the angle count has the picture without the structure. That tells you whether the class needs a reteach or a thirty-second conversation before you plan tomorrow.
