The lesson
Warm-up — between which two?
6 min- Give 4,271 and ask which two thousands it sits between. Then which two hundreds.
- Six of these. Naming the neighbours is the whole skill.
Teach — the target sets the neighbours
15 min- Round 4,271 to the nearest hundred. Neighbours: 4,200 and 4,300. Nearer 4,300.
- Round the same number to the nearest thousand. Neighbours: 4,000 and 5,000. Nearer 4,000.
- Same number, two different answers, because the question was different. Say that explicitly.
- Now 4,271 to the nearest ten thousand: between 0 and 10,000, and nearer 0.
- Take the hard case: 39,600 to the nearest thousand. Neighbours 39,000 and 40,000, and it rounds to 40,000.
- Three digits changed. Point out that only the target place is being decided, and the rest follows.

Guided practice — neighbours first
14 min- Pairs round each number to two different places, writing the neighbours before the answer.
- The partner checks the neighbours are actually multiples of the target place.
- Include several where rounding up crosses into a new place.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a rounding page.
- An answer that is not a multiple of the target place is the clearest sign the target was misidentified.

3 min- Round 29,850 to the nearest thousand and ask how many digits changed.
- Thirty thousand, and three digits moved. It is still one decision.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Rounds 39,600 to the nearest thousand as 39,000 because 'only the thousands digit can change'.
Why: The pupil has learned that rounding affects one digit, which is true of the decision and not of the notation.
Fix: Write the two neighbours. Forty thousand is one of them, and it is nearer. The rule about digits was never a rule.
Rounds to the wrong place because the target was not identified.
Why: A memorised procedure has been applied to whichever digit was noticed first, with no explicit step for choosing the target.
Fix: Underline the target digit before starting. One physical mark on the page and the error stops.
Rounds 4,271 to 4,000 when asked for the nearest hundred, reasoning from the wrong digit.
Why: The digit to the right of the target has been chosen incorrectly, and the rule then runs faultlessly on the wrong input.
Fix: Neighbours first. 4,200 and 4,300 are obviously not thousands, so the mistake is caught before the decision is made.
If they are not there yet
- Round to one place per session, with the neighbours written on a number line.
- Underline the target digit and box the digit to its right as a routine.
If they finish early
- Find the largest number that rounds to 5,000 to the nearest thousand.
- Round the same number to four different places and describe what happens.
- Estimate a product by rounding both factors and say whether the estimate is high or low.
Exit ticket
Round 68,472 to the nearest thousand and to the nearest ten thousand. Write the neighbours for each.
What to look for: 68,000 with neighbours 68,000 and 69,000; 70,000 with neighbours 60,000 and 70,000. An answer that is not a multiple of the target place means the neighbours were skipped.
