Students will be able to count within 1000 and skip count by 5s, 10s and 100s from any starting point.
Students are successful when they can
- Skip counts by tens across a hundred boundary: 180, 190, 200.
- Skip counts by hundreds to 1000.
- Says which digit changes for each kind of skip count.

- A 1000 chart or a set of hundred squares

The lesson
Warm-up — by tens from anywhere
5 min- Skip count by tens from 30, then from 37, then from 84.
- Starting off a decade is where the pattern becomes visible rather than recited.
Teach — which digit is doing the work
13 min- Count by tens from 150 on a number line, out loud, to 210.
- Stop at 190 and ask what comes next before saying it. The tens digit is full, so the hundreds digit moves.
- Write the sequence and circle the digit that changed each time.
- Now count by hundreds from 200 to 900, laying out a hundred flat each time. Only the hundreds digit moves.
- Then by fives from 70 to 120, and notice that the digit changing alternates.
- Ask which is easiest and why. Hundreds, because only one digit ever moves.

Guided practice — cross the boundary
12 min- Pairs draw a start card and a step card and count on eight terms.
- Every start card is chosen so the count crosses a hundred boundary at least once.
- The partner checks against a number line and stops them at any slip.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a skip counting page.
- Errors clustered at 190 to 200 or 495 to 500 are boundary errors and need the base ten materials rather than more sequences.
Close
3 min- Count by hundreds from 400 as a class, then by tens from 480.
- The second one crosses 500 and is the harder of the two.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Counts 180, 190, 100.
Why: The tens digit is full and something must change; the pupil resets the tens to zero but does not carry into the hundreds, or reads the new number from the hundreds alone.
Fix: Build it. Nineteen ten rods plus one more makes twenty rods, which trade for two hundred flats. The trade is what the digit change records.
Skip counts by tens correctly from 40 but not from 47.
Why: The count from a decade is a memorised chant. From 47 there is no chant, and the underlying operation — add ten — has not been separated from it.
Fix: Start every skip count from a non-decade number for a week. The chant is unavailable and the operation has to be used.
Counts by fives as 5, 10, 15 but cannot continue past 100.
Why: The fives sequence was learned to 100 as a list. Nothing about the list says how it continues.
Fix: Show the pattern in the ones digit — always 0 or 5 — and count from 95 across the boundary a few times. The pattern continues, the list did not.
If they are not there yet
- Skip count by tens only, and only within 200, until crossing one boundary is secure.
- Use a marked number line so the jumps are visible and equal rather than remembered.
If they finish early
- Skip count backwards by tens and hundreds from 1000.
- Skip count by twenty-fives, which introduces a new pattern with the same structure.
- Predict whether a given number will appear in a count by fives from 3.

Continue: 270, 280, 290, ___, ___. Then continue: 300, 400, ___, ___.
What to look for: 300, 310 and 500, 600. '200' or '2100' after 290 is the boundary error; the hundreds count is usually secure and is there as a contrast.
