Students will be able to state the value of each digit in a two-digit number, and build that number with tens and ones.
Students are successful when they can
- Says the 4 in 47 means four tens, or forty — not 'four'.
- Builds 63 with six ten-rods and three units without counting by ones.
- Recognises that 3 tens and 12 ones is another way to say 42.
What you need
- Base-ten blocks: ten-rods and unit cubes, or bundled straws

The lesson
Warm-up — how many without counting
5 min- Show four ten-rods and three units for three seconds, then cover them.
- Ask how many. Take answers and, crucially, ask how they knew that fast.
- The child who says 'I counted forty, forty-one, forty-two, forty-three' and the child who says 'four tens and three' are in different places. Note which is which.
Teach — the digit is not the value
12 min- Write 47 on the board. Point at the 4 and ask what it means.
- Expect 'four'. Do not correct it verbally — build it instead. Put four single cubes on the mat and ask whether that is 47.
- Now put four ten-rods down. Count them by tens aloud: 10, 20, 30, 40. Add seven units.
- Write it underneath: 47 = 40 + 7. Say that the 4 is sitting in the tens place, so it is worth forty.
- Repeat with 74 immediately. Same two digits, different values. This pairing does more work than any other example.

Guided practice — build, say, write
12 min- Pairs draw a number card and build it on the mat.
- Each build gets three outputs: build it, say it as 'N tens and M ones', write it as an expanded sum.
- Swap roles each card. Six cards is plenty.
- Then deliberately hand out a pair like 38 and 83 to the same table and let them notice.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete a tens-and-ones page alone, blocks available but not required.
- Watch for children who reach for blocks on every single item — that is fine now and is the thing to fade next week, not today.

3 min- Show 3 tens and 12 ones on the mat. Ask what number it is.
- Let the disagreement happen, then regroup ten of the units into a rod and count again. Leave it there; regrouping is the next lesson.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Reads the 4 in 47 as 'four'.
Why: Every previous year of school taught that a digit names a quantity directly. Positional value is the first time the same symbol means different things, and nothing in the notation signals it.
Fix: Never argue with the answer — build both. Four cubes next to four rods, both labelled '4'. The contradiction is visible on the desk and settles the point faster than an explanation.
Writes 407 for 'forty-seven'.
Why: They are transcribing speech faithfully: 'forty' is written 40, 'seven' is written 7. The error is a correct rule applied where it does not hold.
Fix: Write 40 and 7 on separate cards and physically overlap the 7 onto the zero. The zero was a placeholder holding the ones spot, and the 7 takes its job.
Insists 3 tens and 12 ones is not a real number, or calls it 312.
Why: Place value has been learned as a formatting rule — one digit per column — rather than as a statement about quantity. A column holding twelve breaks the rule, so it must be wrong.
Fix: Count the blocks by ones as a class. There are 42. The quantity is not in dispute; only the way of writing it is, and that is exactly the door into regrouping.
If they are not there yet
- Use bundled straws rather than pre-made rods, so a ten is something they built and can unbuild.
- Stay within 10-39 until the tens count is secure.
- Colour-code the mat columns and keep the same colours on the written work.
If they finish early
- Ask for every way to make 42 with tens and ones. There are five, and finding all of them is a genuine problem.
- Give three-digit numbers and let them predict the hundreds place before it is taught.
- Ask what 47 would mean if a ten were worth five instead. It is a real question about positional systems and strong Grade 1 students can hold it.
