Objective
Students will be able to tell time to the nearest minute and find an elapsed time interval in minutes.
Students are successful when they can
- Reads a clock to the minute by counting on from the nearest five.
- Finds an elapsed time using a number line rather than a written subtraction.
- Handles an interval that crosses an hour.

The lesson
Warm-up — count on from the five
5 min- Show times where the long hand is between numbers. Count round in fives to the number before, then on in ones.
- Do five of them. Nothing else in the reading is new.
Teach — jumping along a time line
14 min- Read 3:47 together by counting to 45 then on two.
- Now the interval: a film starts at 3:47 and ends at 4:25. How long?
- Try it as a written subtraction on the board and let it go wrong — 4:25 minus 3:47 does not borrow in tens.
- Draw a number line instead. From 3:47 jump 13 minutes to 4:00. Then 25 more to 4:25. Thirteen and twenty-five is thirty-eight.
- Say why the jump to the hour comes first: sixty is where the awkwardness lives, and landing on it removes the problem.
- Do one more crossing two hours, so the method is seen to scale.

Guided practice — draw the jumps
12 min- Pairs find elapsed times using a number line, drawing every jump.
- The first jump must land on an hour.
- Then they work backwards: given a start time and a duration, find the end time.
Independent practice
11 min- Students complete an elapsed time page.
- Answers ending in a number above 59 mean the column subtraction was used somewhere.
Close
3 min- Give a start of 2:50 and an end of 3:15 and ask only for the first jump.
- Ten minutes to 3:00, then fifteen. Twenty-five, and stop.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Subtracts 4:25 − 3:47 in columns and gets 78 minutes.
Why: The written method has been transferred from base ten, where borrowing gives ten. Time borrows sixty, and nothing in the layout says so.
Fix: Use the number line for every interval. It never needs a borrow, so the base ten habit has nowhere to fire.
Reads 3:47 as 3:9 because the long hand is between 9 and 10.
Why: The number nearest the hand is being read directly, which works for the hour hand and not the minute hand.
Fix: Count round in fives to the number before, then on in ones. Making that a routine removes the guess.
Gives an elapsed time of 138 minutes as 1 hour 38 minutes without checking.
Why: The conversion has been done by taking the first digit as hours, which happens to work here and fails at 200 minutes.
Fix: Convert by counting sixties. Two sixties is 120, leaving 18, so it is 2 hours 18 minutes. The arithmetic replaces the pattern-match.
If they are not there yet
- Work with intervals within one hour before crossing an hour boundary.
- Provide a pre-drawn number line with the hours already marked.
If they finish early
- Find an interval crossing midday, where a.m. becomes p.m.
- Work backwards from an end time and a duration to find the start.
- Add three consecutive intervals to find a total journey time.
Exit ticket
A lesson starts at 10:35 and ends at 11:20. How long is it? Show your jumps.
What to look for: 45 minutes, as 25 to the hour then 20. An answer of 85 or 15 means a column subtraction was attempted rather than a number line.
