Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts.
Objective
Students will be able to explain 1/b as one part of a whole divided into b equal parts, and identify when a partition is not valid.
Students are successful when they can
- Explains that the denominator counts the equal parts the whole was cut into.
- Rejects a shape split into unequal parts as a valid representation of a fraction.
- Recognises that 1/8 is smaller than 1/4, and explains why using the parts.
What you need
- Paper strips of identical length, six per student
- Fraction circles or tiles
- Coloured pencils

The lesson
Warm-up — fair shares
5 min- Ask how to share one paper strip fairly between two people, then four.
- Fold rather than discuss. Every student folds a strip in half, then another into quarters.
- The word to keep saying is 'fair'. It becomes 'equal' in the next section and the transfer should be audible.
Teach — the denominator is a count of equal parts
14 min- Take a folded strip in quarters. Shade one part. Write 1/4.
- Name the parts explicitly: the 4 says the whole was cut into four equal pieces; the 1 says we have one of them.
- Fold a fresh strip into eighths and shade one. Write 1/8. Place the two strips one above the other.
- Ask which shaded piece is bigger. Then ask which number is bigger. Sit in that contradiction for a moment — it is the single most productive thirty seconds in the fractions unit.
- Resolve it with the strips, not with a rule: more pieces from the same whole means smaller pieces.
- Now show a strip cut into four unequal pieces with one shaded. Ask whether it is 1/4. It is not, and the reason is the whole lesson.

Guided practice — build and compare
13 min- Pairs fold strips into halves, thirds, quarters, sixths and eighths, labelling each part.
- They line the strips up flush at the left edge and order the unit fractions from largest to smallest.
- Ask for the rule they can see. Aim for a statement about the denominator and the size of the part, in their words.
- Then hand out a card showing an unequal partition and ask them to explain what is wrong with it.
Independent practice
10 min- Students shade unit fractions of given shapes and write the fraction for each.
- Include at least one shape with unequal parts that must be rejected. Every item being valid teaches that every partition is valid.
Close
3 min- Hold up 1/3 and 1/5 strips. Ask which is bigger and take a justification, not just an answer.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says 1/8 is bigger than 1/4 because 8 is bigger than 4.
Why: Two years of whole-number comparison have established that the bigger symbol means the bigger amount. The denominator is the first number a child meets where growing it shrinks the value.
Fix: Do not explain — stack the strips. Then ask them to state the rule themselves. A rule they generate from a picture survives; a rule they are given does not.
Accepts any shape cut into four pieces as showing quarters.
Why: The count of pieces is visible and the equality of them is not, so the child attends to the part they can see.
Fix: Present unequal partitions routinely and ask 'is this a quarter?' as a genuine question with both answers available. If every example in the lesson is valid, the equality condition never has to be used.
Shades 1/4 of a large circle and 1/4 of a small circle and says they are the same amount.
Why: The fraction is being treated as an absolute quantity rather than as a relationship to a particular whole.
Fix: Ask 'a quarter of what?' every time. Keep two different-sized wholes on display through the unit so the question stays live.
If they are not there yet
- Fold rather than draw. A drawn partition can be unequal without the child noticing; a folded one cannot.
- Stay with halves, quarters and eighths, where each fold is a halving of the last.
If they finish early
- Ask for a fraction between 1/4 and 1/3 and let them hunt for it with strips.
- Give non-unit fractions: if 1/6 is one part, what is 5/6?
- Ask whether 1/4 of a strip and 2/8 of the same strip are the same, and have them prove it by folding.
Exit ticket
Draw a rectangle. Split it into 6 equal parts and shade 1. Write the fraction. Then explain what the 6 tells you.
What to look for: 1/6 with an explanation naming six equal parts. Visibly unequal parts with the label 1/6 is the equality misconception and is worth catching now — it becomes very expensive during equivalence work in Grade 4.
