Objective
Students will be able to describe an angle as an amount of turn measured in degrees and measure one with a protractor.
Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up — make a turn
6 min- Everyone stands and makes a quarter turn, then a half turn, then a full turn.
- Name them: 90, 180 and 360 degrees. The body knows this before the protractor does.
Teach — length is not the measure
15 min- Open the split-pin strips to about 40 degrees. Ask what the angle is between them.
- Now slide the strips out so the arms are twice as long, without changing the opening. Ask again.
- Nothing changed. The angle is the amount of turn from one arm to the other, and the arms could be a mile long.
- Show two drawn angles, equal in opening, with very different arm lengths, and let the class check with the strips.
- Introduce the degree: a full turn is 360, so one degree is one 360th of a turn.
- Measure one angle with a protractor, placing the centre on the vertex and the zero line on an arm. Read from the scale that starts at zero on that arm.

Guided practice — estimate then measure
14 min- Pairs classify each angle by eye first — acute, right, obtuse — then measure it.
- The classification is the check: a measurement of 130 on an angle they called acute means the wrong scale was read.
- Include angles with deliberately short and long arms.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete an angles page.
- Measurements that are 180 minus the right answer mean the wrong protractor scale was used, and that is the error to name.

3 min- Show an obtuse angle with very short arms and ask for a classification.
- Obtuse, and the arm length had nothing to do with it.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says the angle with longer arms is bigger.
Why: The drawing is physically larger, and size has meant bigger in every previous measurement context.
Fix: Use the split-pin strips and slide the arms out without changing the opening. The angle demonstrably does not move.
Reads 50 degrees as 130 on the protractor.
Why: The protractor has two scales and the wrong one has been read. Both give a plausible number and nothing in the tool says which is right.
Fix: Classify by eye first. An angle that looks clearly acute cannot be 130, so the estimate catches the misread.
Places the protractor's edge on the vertex rather than its centre mark.
Why: The physical edge looks like the natural place to line up, in the same way a ruler's end does.
Fix: Point out the centre mark and the crosshair. It is the same lesson as the ruler's zero — the tool's edge is not its origin.
If they are not there yet
- Classify angles by eye against a right-angle corner of paper before measuring anything.
- Use a protractor with a single scale, or cover one scale with tape.
If they finish early
- Find the missing angle on a straight line or in a right angle.
- Draw an angle of a given size.
- Measure the interior angles of a triangle and add them.
