Students will be able to explain volume as the number of unit cubes that fill a solid figure with no gaps or overlaps.

The lesson
Warm-up — fill the box
6 min- Give each pair a small open box and cubes and ask them to fill it exactly.
- Count the cubes. That count is the volume, before the word is introduced.
Teach — cubes, including the ones you cannot see
15 min- Define volume: how many unit cubes fill the solid, with no gaps and no overlaps.
- Build a 3 by 2 by 2 solid. Count the cubes: 12. State it as 12 cubic units.
- Now show a drawing of the same solid. Ask how many cubes are visible and how many exist. Several are hidden.
- Count by layers instead: the bottom layer has 6, and there are 2 layers.
- Contrast with area: cover one face with squares. That is a different measurement of the same object.
- Ask what a cubic unit looks like. A cube one unit on each side — and holding one makes the unit concrete.

Guided practice — build and count
14 min- Pairs build solids from drawings and count the cubes.
- They count twice — one by one, and by layers — and compare.
- Then they build two different solids with the same volume.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a volume page.
- Counts that match the visible cubes only are the diagnostic error and are usually a few too low.
Close
3 min- Show a drawn 4 by 3 by 2 solid and ask for the volume and the unit.
- 24 cubic units, and the unit is half the answer.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Counts only the cubes visible in a drawing.
Why: The drawing shows what can be seen and the hidden cubes have to be inferred, which is a genuinely new demand.
Fix: Build the solid from the drawing with real cubes. The hidden ones are in your hand, and after a few builds they get inferred.
Confuses volume with surface area and counts the squares on the outside.
Why: Both are measurements of the same solid and both involve counting units. Nothing has yet separated inside from outside.
Fix: Fill for volume, wrap for surface area. Two different physical actions on the same box in the same minute.
Gives the volume in square units or plain units.
Why: The unit has been carried over from area or from the side lengths without noticing the quantity changed again.
Fix: Hold up one cube. That is the unit being counted, and it is a cube, so the answer counts cubic units.
If they are not there yet
- Build every solid physically before counting from a drawing.
- Use solids no larger than 3 by 3 by 2 where counting one by one is still reliable.
If they finish early
- Find the volume of a solid made from two rectangular prisms joined together.
- Find all the rectangular prisms with whole-number sides and a volume of 24.
- Compare the volume and surface area of two different solids with the same volume.

A solid is built from cubes in 3 layers, each layer 4 by 2. What is its volume? Give the unit.
What to look for: 24 cubic units. A count based on visible faces will be lower; an answer in square units means the unit was carried over from area.
