Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
Objective
Students will be able to write the numeral 0-20 that matches a counted set of objects.
Students are successful when they can
- Writes each numeral 0 to 20 legibly and the right way round.
- Counts a set and records the total as a numeral rather than tally marks.
- Writes 0 for an empty set and can say what it means.

- Counters and small trays, one tray per pair

The lesson
Warm-up — how many, then which numeral
5 min- Hold up handfuls of counters. Class counts aloud and holds up the matching numeral card.
- Include a handful of none. Let the pause happen before showing the 0 card.
Teach — the numeral is a record of the count
8 min- Count seven counters into a tray, slowly, touching each one.
- Write 7. Say plainly that the 7 is not a shape to copy — it is what the counting came to.
- Do the same for 13, drawing attention to the fact that two digits are written but one number is meant.
- Model the formation of the digits that reverse most — 3, 5, 7 and 9 — with a starting dot.
- Empty the tray. Ask how many. Write 0, and say it counts the nothing rather than meaning there is no answer.

Guided practice — count, write, check
8 min- Pairs take a tray, count the counters, and each writes the numeral on a whiteboard.
- They compare boards before checking, so a disagreement gets discussed rather than corrected.
- Swap trays and repeat. Include one empty tray in circulation.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a count-and-write page.
- Look for reversals and for teen numbers written with the digits swapped — 41 for 14 — which is a different error and needs a different response.

3 min- Show a numeral; children make that many claps.
- Finish on 0 and let them work out that the right response is silence.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Writes 41 for fourteen.
Why: The number is heard as 'four-teen' and written in the order it is said. English says the ones first in the teens, and the child is being consistent with what they hear.
Fix: Build 14 on a ten frame plus four loose counters. The ten comes first physically, so the ten digit comes first in writing. Say 'ten and four' alongside 'fourteen' for a few weeks.
Writes a reversed 3 or 7 and does not notice.
Why: Orientation is not yet part of what makes a symbol that symbol — the same child recognises a cup upside down as still a cup, and is applying that.
Fix: A starting dot and a consistent stroke order, not repeated erasing. Reversal at this age is a motor-memory issue, and correcting the formation teaches faster than marking it wrong.
Leaves the answer blank for an empty set.
Why: Zero has been understood as the absence of a number rather than as a number, so there seems to be nothing to write.
Fix: Ask how many elephants are in the room, and write 0. Zero answers a question that was genuinely asked, and that is what makes it a number rather than a blank.
If they are not there yet
- Work to 10 before 20. The teens carry a naming irregularity that has nothing to do with writing numerals, and mixing the two makes both harder.
- Provide a numeral strip to copy from, and remove it a digit at a time as each is secure.
If they finish early
- Give the numeral and ask for the set, which is the harder direction and shows whether the link runs both ways.
- Ask for the numeral one more and one less than the count, without recounting.
- Write numerals to 30, where the pattern becomes regular and predictable.

Count the stars and write how many. Then write how many are left if all of them are taken away.
What to look for: A correct numeral, then 0. A blank second answer means zero is not yet a number to them. A reversed digit with the right value is a handwriting note, not a maths one.
