Objective
Students will be able to name a structure, say whether it is internal or external, and say what it does.
Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up
5 min- Show a cactus spine and a cactus's water-storing stem.
- Ask which you can see from outside, and what each is for.
Teach — where it is, and what it does
14 min- Sort ears, thorns, scales and bark as external.
- Sort heart, lungs, roots and stem as internal.
- For each, name the function: ears detect sound, roots draw up water.
- Then the second half: link the function to survival, growth, behaviour or reproduction.
- Take a flower and ask which of the four it supports. Reproduction.
- Say why both lists matter: an argument that names only what you can see is half an argument.

Investigate — dissect and label
19 min- Groups examine a flower or a fruit and label internal and external structures.
- For each label they write the function.
- They link each function to one of the four purposes.
- They find a structure that supports two of the four.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Thinks only animals have structures.
Why: Structures sound animal.
Fix: Roots, stem and bark are structures with functions.
Names the structure without the function.
Why: The name is the visible thing.
Fix: Ask what it does. A label with no function is not an argument.
Thinks internal means hidden and unimportant.
Why: You cannot see it.
Fix: A heart is invisible and indispensable.
