The lesson
Warm-up — kinds, not numbers
5 min- Show a picture with twenty ants and one beetle.
- Ask how many kinds are there. Two, not twenty-one.
Teach — same time, two places
13 min- Say the plan: ten minutes under the hedge, ten minutes on the mown field.
- Ask why the same ten minutes each. So the counts can be compared.
- Model recording: one tick per new KIND, not per animal.
- Read the class record: 7 kinds under the hedge, 3 on the field.
- Ask why the hedge might hold more: damp, sheltered, more places to hide.
- Say the honest limit: ten minutes is a sample, not everything that lives there.

Investigate — survey two habitats
17 min- Groups survey the first habitat for exactly ten minutes, recording kinds.
- They move to the second and repeat with the same timer.
- They total the kinds for each and draw two bars.
- They write one reason the counts differ.

- Point at the tallest and shortest bar with a pupil who is stuck.
