- World maps of volcanoes, earthquakes, mountains and plate boundaries
- Tracing paper for overlaying

The lesson
Warm-up
5 min- Show a world map of volcanoes with no other information.
- Ask what the class notices about where they are.
Teach — overlay, then explain
14 min- Trace the volcano map onto tracing paper.
- Lay it over the earthquake map. Ask what the class sees.
- Lay both over the plate boundary map.
- State the pattern: volcanoes and earthquakes line up along plate edges.
- Do a second pattern: deserts in belts either side of the equator.
- Say the two steps: describe the pattern first, then explain it.

Investigate — overlay three maps
19 min- Groups trace and overlay three feature maps.
- They describe two patterns they can see.
- They use a fourth map to explain one of them.
- They find a feature that does not fit the pattern.
Independent practice
14 min- Students complete the 'Patterns on the Map' page.
- Check answers describe a pattern, not a single place.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Names one volcano rather than a pattern.
Why: A single feature is easier to see.
Fix: A pattern is where many of them are. Look at the whole map.
Explains before describing.
Why: The explanation is the interesting part.
Fix: Describe first. Otherwise you are fitting the map to the story.
Thinks every feature must fit.
Why: The pattern is strong.
Fix: Find one that does not. That is information too.

- Find a pattern that two maps disagree about.
- Explain an island chain across an ocean.
- Say what map you would need to test your explanation.

Volcanoes and earthquakes both form long narrow bands round the Pacific. Describe the pattern and explain it.
What to look for: Both line up along the edges of Earth's plates. Naming one volcano means the pattern step is missing.
