Warm-up
5 min- Send three flashes and ask what they meant.
- Establish that nothing was agreed, so nothing was communicated.
Teach — the code is the information
14 min- Agree a code: one flash yes, two no, three repeat.
- Send five messages and tally how many arrived correctly.
- Change to a sound code and repeat over the same distance.
- Compare the two tallies and say which transferred information better.
- Ask why a missed flash matters: the pattern is misread, not just shortened.
- Say why some codes repeat: a repeat catches a missed part.

Investigate — two solutions, ten messages
19 min- Groups design two ways of sending the same code.
- They send ten messages with each, over the same distance.
- They tally correct receptions for both.
- They say which is better, and in what conditions the other would win.
