Students will be able to read a sequence of rock layers as a history of one place.
Students are successful when they can

- Describes the change from bottom to top.

- A drawing or photograph of a layered cutting
- Jars of sand, gravel and mud for building a layered model

The lesson
Warm-up
5 min- Pour sand, then gravel, then mud into a jar of water.
- Ask which layer settled first, and how you can tell.
Teach — bottom first, then read upwards
14 min- State the rule the jar showed: lower layers were laid down first.
- Read the cutting from the bottom: hard rock with no fossils.
- Next: coal with ferns, so a swampy forest.
- Next: mudstone with sea shells, so the sea came in.
- Then sandstone with ripples, then soil with modern roots.
- Say what the whole sequence is: a history of one place, read bottom to top.

Investigate — build and read
19 min- Groups build a layered model in a jar and let it settle.
- They record the order and relate it to the rule.
- They then read a real cutting drawing and infer an environment per layer.
- They write the history of the place in four sentences.

- Check the oldest layer is identified with a reason.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Reads the layers from the top down as a sequence in time.
Why: Top is where you start looking.
Fix: The bottom formed first. Read upwards for the history.
Thinks fossils were placed there.
Why: They look arranged.
Fix: They are the remains of what lived there when the layer formed.
Thinks layers must be the same age everywhere.
Why: They look continuous.
Fix: Layers form at different times in different places. That is why fossils help.
