The lesson
Warm-up
5 min- Offer the brief 'design a good water filter'.
- Ask two groups what they would build, and note how differently they answer.
Teach — could somebody else check it?
15 min- Rewrite 'good' as 'removes all visible sediment from 500 ml in two minutes'.
- Ask what changed: another group could now check it.
- List constraints: materials in school, fifteen pounds, three lessons, safe unsupervised.
- Test a doubtful line: 'must use a coffee filter'. That is a solution, not a criterion.
- Say why solutions must not hide in criteria: they rule out better designs before testing.
- Add one criterion about the user, such as being understood by a Year 2 class.

Investigate — write, swap, score
22 min- Groups write a brief with four criteria and four constraints.
- They swap briefs and attempt to score a sketch design against another group's.
- They mark every criterion they could not apply.
- They rewrite those and return the brief.
