Students will be able to show that a sound comes with a vibration, in both directions.
Students are successful when they can

- Stops a sound by stopping the vibration.
- Shows a sound making something else move.

- A drum with rice or salt on the skin, a ruler, a rubber band box
- A tuning fork and a beaker of water if available

The lesson
Warm-up — find the shaking
5 min- Twang a ruler over the edge of a desk and ask what the class can see.
- Ask what they would feel if they touched it while it sounded.
Teach — both directions
13 min- Put rice on a drum skin and tap it. The rice hops.
- Ask what is moving the rice. The skin, because it is vibrating.
- Hold the skin and tap again. No sound and no hopping.
- Now the other direction: shout at the drum without touching it. The rice hops again.
- Ask what moved the skin this time. The sound.
- Say both halves plainly: a vibrating thing makes a sound, and a sound can set something vibrating.

Investigate — four sound stations
17 min- Groups rotate through stations: rice on a drum, a twanged ruler, a rubber band box, a humming throat.
- At each one they find the vibrating part and write or draw it.
- At each one they stop the sound by stopping the vibration.
- At the drum station they make the rice hop without touching the drum.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete the 'Something Is Always Shaking' page.
- Look for answers naming a vibration rather than naming the object.

3 min- Ask for one sound in the room and what is vibrating to make it.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Thinks sound is made by hitting rather than by vibrating.
Why: Hitting is what you do.
Fix: Hit the held drum. Same hit, no vibration, no sound.
Thinks only loud things vibrate.
Why: Loud vibrations are visible.
Fix: Hum quietly with a hand on the throat. Quiet sounds vibrate too.
Accepts the first direction and not the second.
Why: A sound making something move is less familiar.
Fix: Shout at the rice without touching the drum. The sound did that.
If they are not there yet
- Two stations rather than four.
- Give the word vibrating on a card to point at.
If they finish early
- Find a sound whose vibration you cannot see, and say how you know.
- Make the same object give a higher and a lower sound.
- Explain why a speaker makes a paper cone buzz.
