Objective
Students will be able to point at a part of an object's shape and say what job it does.
Students are successful when they can
- Names a part of the shape.
- Says what that part is for.
- Draws a shape for a stated job.
What you need
- Real objects: a cup with a handle, a funnel, a spade, a hook
- Paper and pencils for sketching
- The printable practice sheet linked at the end of this plan
The lesson
Warm-up — the cup with no handle
5 min- Show a cup of hot water and a cup with a handle. Ask which you would pick up.
- Ask what the handle is for.
Teach — every part is for something
12 min- Hold the funnel. Ask why it is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom.
- Hold the spade. Ask why the blade is flat rather than round.
- Hold the hook. Ask why the end is bent.
- Say the rule: the shape is not decoration, it is doing a job.
- Sketch the hook on the board and label the bent end with its job.
- Say what a drawing has to show: the part that matters, not every detail.
“What would go wrong if that part were a different shape?”
Investigate — sketch and label
15 min- Pairs choose one object and sketch it big.
- They label two parts with the job each part does.
- They swap sketches and try to work out the object from the labels.
- One pair redraws a spade blade as a circle and says what would go wrong.
Independent practice
10 min- Students complete the 'The Shape Does the Job' page.
- Check the reason names a job rather than an appearance.

3 min- Hold up a new object and ask which part does the job.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says a shape is that way because it looks nice.
Why: Some of it is styling.
Fix: Change the part in a drawing and ask what stops working.
Draws every detail and labels none.
Why: Drawing is the enjoyable bit.
Fix: The drawing is for showing how it works. Label two parts.
Thinks the job is what it is made of, not its shape.
Why: Material is a real cause too.
Fix: A plastic hook and a metal hook are both bent. The bend is the shape doing the job.

- Design a handle for something that has none.
- Draw two shapes for the same job and say which is better.
- Find a shape in the classroom whose job you cannot work out.
