Students will be able to build and label a structure whose shape does a stated job.
Students are successful when they can

What you need
- Card, straws, tape, and weights for testing
- Photographs of a dam, a bridge truss, a sloping roof
- The printable practice sheet linked at the end of this plan
The lesson
Warm-up — two towers
5 min- Build one tall thin tower and one wide-based tower from card.
- Push both gently and ask which stood, and why.
Teach — the shape does the work
13 min- Label the wide base: it stops the tower toppling.
- Show a triangle in a bridge frame and squash a square beside it.
- Label the triangle: it keeps the frame from bending.
- Show a dam wide at the base and say what the water is pushing against.
- Show a sloping roof and ask what happens to the rain.
- Say the test for every label: change that shape and what stops working?
“Change that part in your head. What goes wrong?”
Investigate — build and test
17 min- Groups build a bridge or tower for a stated job with a weight to hold.
- They label the shape that does the job.
- They rebuild it with that shape changed and test again.
- They record what happened both times.

12 min- Students complete the 'Why It Is That Shape' page.
- Check labels name jobs rather than parts.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Thinks a stronger material would do instead of a better shape.
Why: Strength is the obvious variable.
Fix: Same card, two shapes, different results. The shape did that.
Labels parts without saying what they do.
Why: Naming feels complete.
Fix: 'Triangle' is a name. 'Stops it bending' is a job.
Does not test the changed version.
Why: The first one worked.
Fix: The change is the evidence. Build it and watch.
