Students will be able to say whether a good comes from the local area and why.
Students are successful when they can
- Sorts goods by origin.
- Gives a reason for a far-away one.
- Names a service that must be local.

- The greengrocer's board
- Real labels from local and imported goods

The lesson
Warm-up — read the board
5 min- Read the greengrocer's board. It says where each item came from.
- Ask why a shop would bother to say.
Teach — climate, distance, and services
13 min- Sort six items into 'from our area' and 'from somewhere else'.
- Ask why oranges are not from Hill Farm. Not warm enough.
- Ask why milk is local. It does not keep long enough to travel far.
- Add a service — a haircut — and note it cannot be shipped at all.
- Say the three reasons: climate, keeping, and services staying put.

Guided practice — sort twelve
12 min- Pairs sort twelve items and services.
- For three far-away ones they give a reason.
- They name one service that could not travel.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete the from-our-area page.
- Read each item aloud.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Thinks anything could be produced locally with effort.
Why: Growing is growing.
Fix: Ask what an orange needs. Warmth all year is not available here.
Forgets services entirely.
Why: The examples are goods.
Fix: Add the barber. Services are the clearest local case.
Sorts by whether it is familiar.
Why: Familiar feels local.
Fix: Read the label. Tea is familiar and travels a very long way.
