The lesson
Warm-up — count what passes
5 min- List everything that passed the school gate this morning.
- Include the post and the bus.
Teach — people, goods, ideas
13 min- Sort the list into people, goods and ideas.
- The third pile will be empty at first. Add news of the fair.
- Ask how that travelled: a poster, then people telling each other.
- Give a reason for one item in each pile.
- Say the Grade 1 addition: ideas move through a street as surely as lorries do.

12 min- Pairs match eight movers to reasons.
- They mark which are ideas.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Leaves the ideas pile empty.
Why: Movement means physical movement.
Fix: The fair poster. Once named, the class finds more.
Gives a how with no why.
Why: The vehicle is concrete.
Fix: Two answers per item.
Thinks goods arrive without anybody carrying them.
Why: Deliveries appear.
Fix: Ask who drove. Every good had a person behind it.
If they are not there yet
- Two piles rather than three.
- Give the reason and name the mover.
If they finish early
- Trace an idea back to where it started.
- Say what stops something moving.
- Say how news travelled before posters.
