The lesson
Warm-up — where would you fish?
5 min- Ask where a fisher works and why not in a desert.
- The answer is obvious, which is the point of starting here.
Teach — the land offers, people take it up
13 min- Match the coast to fishing. Say what the coast offers.
- Match flat fields to growing crops. Say what the land offers.
- Match hills to sheep, and say why not crops.
- Say the pattern: the land makes some work easy and some impossible.
- Ask what work suits our own area, and why.

Guided practice — match and justify
12 min- Pairs match six places to six jobs.
- For each they say what the land offers.
- They name one job that would not suit each place.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete the land-and-work page.
- Read each place aloud.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Matches on a shared word rather than on the land.
Why: 'Sea' appears in the place and the job.
Fix: Ask what the land offers. The reason has to be about the ground or the water.
Thinks people could do any job anywhere.
Why: Modern work often is location-free.
Fix: Ask them to farm a cliff. Some work is fixed by the land, and those are the cases here.
Thinks the land decides completely.
Why: The pattern is strong.
Fix: Say that people choose too. The land offers; it does not command.

- Say what work our area used to have.
- Say what would change the work in a place.
