Students are successful when they can
- Sorts features into two groups.
- Names a natural feature near school.
- Names one people made.

The lesson
Warm-up — out of the window
5 min- List six things visible from the window.
- Do not sort them yet.
Teach — was it here before people?
13 min- Take each item from the window list and ask the test question.
- Sort them into two piles as you go.
- Take a hard one — a planted tree — and let the class argue it.
- Say the useful answer: some things are both, and noticing that is the point.
- Name the two groups: natural and made by people.
“Would that be there if no people had ever lived here?”
Guided practice — sort twelve
12 min- Pairs sort twelve feature cards.
- They put any they think is both in the middle.
- Take feedback on the middle pile.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete the nature-or-people page.
- Read each feature aloud.

2 min- Name one of each from the window.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Sorts a planted tree as fully natural.
Why: Trees are natural things.
Fix: Ask who put it there. A middle pile is the honest place for it.
Sorts anything green as natural.
Why: Colour is a faster test than origin.
Fix: A mown lawn is green and shaped by people. Ask the test question each time.
Thinks people-made means recent.
Why: Old things feel like they were always there.
Fix: An old wall was built by somebody. Age does not move it to the natural pile.

- Find something that is both.
- Say what natural features made people settle here.
- Name a feature that has changed pile over time.
