The lesson
Warm-up — check your label
5 min- Everybody finds a label on something they are wearing or using.
- Read three aloud.
Teach — run the string
13 min- Take a banana. Find the country on the globe and run string from there to here.
- Ask who picked it. Somebody did, and they have a name we do not know.
- Do a second item and run a second string.
- Say the idea: the things in your bag connect you to people you will never meet.
- Count the strings at the end.
“Somebody picked that. They are real, and you are holding their work.”
Guided practice — trace three
12 min- Pairs trace three items back to a country.
- For each they name a job somebody did.
- They add one string to the class globe.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete the what-you-buy page.
- Read each item aloud.

2 min- Count the strings. Name the furthest one.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Thinks things arrive with nobody involved.
Why: Shops present goods with no history.
Fix: Name a job at each step. Somebody grew, packed, carried and stacked it.
Thinks the label's country is where the shop is.
Why: Both are printed nearby.
Fix: Read the words. 'Product of' names where it came from.
Thinks only food travels.
Why: Food labels are the ones they have read.
Fix: Check a shoe or a pencil. Almost everything has an origin.
