What Is the Story Teaching? is a free printable Grade 1 English worksheet on naming the central message of a story, aligned to Common Core standard RL.1.2. It prints 2 questions with an answer key on its own sheet of paper, in 25 versions, 22 of them with different questions, so no two pupils in the class work from the same page. Set 1 has all 25 in a single PDF. 22 of these 25 sets ask different questions — this skill does not have 25 questions to give. The rest reorder them, so no two pupils have the same paper in front of them.

The Blue Door
At the end of the lane stood a house with a blue door. Nobody had lived there for years. The grass grew as high as Tomas.
One Saturday a van pulled up. A woman got out with a ladder and a tin of paint. By teatime the blue door was bright yellow.
Tomas waved. The woman waved back. "I'm Nita," she called. "Come and see the garden when I've cut it."

Market Day
On Saturdays, Grandpa took Omar to the market. Omar carried the basket. Grandpa carried the money.
Omar's job was to pick the apples. He learned to press each one gently with his thumb. A soft spot meant the apple would be brown inside.
One week Grandpa let Omar carry the money instead. Omar counted the change twice. He got it right both times.
