  2. 2.1. An earthquake is the ground shaking; a volcano is melted rock coming out and building a mountain. 2. A volcano builds new rock at the surface; an earthquake shakes the ground that is already there. 3. Both are caused by what the Earth's crust is doing, and both can be dangerous.
