Rain on the Roof

Rain on the roof, rain on the road, rain on the back of a slow brown toad. Rain on the window, rain on the pane, rain on the roses, rain, rain, rain. Rain in the gutter, rain in the drain, rain till the puddle is deep as a lane. Rain on the roof, rain on the road — and out comes the sun for the slow brown toad.

The Bread That Would Not Rise

Nana let Ada make the bread on her own for the first time. Ada measured the flour, the salt and the water. She kneaded the dough until her arms ached. Then she covered the bowl and waited. An hour later the dough sat in the bowl exactly as she had left it. It had not risen at all. Nana looked at the packet on the shelf. "You used the salt twice," she said. "There is no yeast in it." Ada wanted to throw the bowl across the kitchen. Instead she washed it out and started again.

  1. 1.1. A poem is written in short lines and verses, with rhyme and a repeated line like "rain on the roof". 2. It has a beginning, a change and an ending — the rain stops and the sun comes out.
  2. 2.1. It is about a real kitchen and does not end with a stated moral about animals. 2. Both keep going after a first attempt fails.
