  1. 1.1. Both explain a present-day fact by going back to how it came about. 2. This is cause and effect throughout; that one is chronological, following a river across centuries.
  2. 2.1. This corrects a wrong explanation before giving the right ones; that one builds a mechanism forwards. 2. Both say the obvious explanation is not the main one.
