A minute of the elected school board for the region, 1890. SCHOOL BOARD, MINUTE OF 4 MARCH 1890 Present: nine members. Absent: two. Resolved: that half-time working for children under eleven cease. Voted: six for, three against. Members against stated that families depend on the wage. The clerk to inform the mill owners.

A Disputed History of the Region

An extract from a regional history published in 1998. This is a SECONDARY work, and other historians disagree with it. THE REGION'S CENTURY The author argues the mills, not the harbour, made the region. Mill employment rose fastest and drew people from the uplands. Other historians point to the harbour returns and disagree. The author concedes the harbour paid for the roads and the schools. The dispute turns on which measure counts: people, or money.
