  1. 1.1. Because common letters got short patterns, an average message came out much shorter. 2. Between words — seven dots long, against three between letters. 3. Because Morse is sent through time as signals, so the length of a gap is part of the meaning.
  2. 2.1. The sails turn, the gears mesh, the millstones turn. 2. Because the smaller gear has fewer teeth, it spins faster, so the stone turns faster than the sails. 3. The wind would pass straight through and they would not turn.
