Why Tall Buildings Do Not Fall Over
A tall building needs a wide, deep base. The base is called a foundation. It spreads the weight into the ground. Wind pushes hard on a tall building. Inside, a strong core of concrete runs from the bottom to the top like a spine. The core stops the building bending too far. The tallest buildings sway a little in strong wind. That is meant to happen. A building that could not bend at all would crack.
- 1. The author says swaying is meant to happen. What reason is given?
- 2. What do the tallest buildings do in strong wind?
- 3. What is the base of a tall building called?
- 4. What does "sway" mean here?
Owls
Owls hunt at night. Their eyes are very large, so they can see when there is almost no light. An owl's feathers have soft edges. This makes their wings quiet. A mouse cannot hear an owl coming. Owls cannot move their eyes from side to side. Instead, they turn their whole head. An owl can turn its head much further than you can.
- 1. When do owls hunt?
- 2. What does "hunt" mean in this text?
- 3. What makes an owl's wings quiet?
- 4. Why are an owl's eyes very large?
