The Jar of Shells
Every summer, Ivy filled a jar with shells from the beach. The jar sat on her windowsill all winter.
One day her little brother knocked the jar off the sill. It did not break, but the shells rolled everywhere. Ivy felt hot and cross. Then she saw that Ben was crying.
"It was an accident," she said. "Help me find them." They crawled under the bed together. They found every shell but one.
1. What happened after the shells rolled everywhere?
2. Where had Ivy kept the jar?
2.Read the text, then answer the questions.
Market Day
On Saturdays, Grandpa took Omar to the market. Omar carried the basket. Grandpa carried the money.
Omar's job was to pick the apples. He learned to press each one gently with his thumb. A soft spot meant the apple would be brown inside.
One week Grandpa let Omar carry the money instead. Omar counted the change twice. He got it right both times.
1. What did Omar do before he was allowed to carry the money?
2. When and where does this story happen?

It practises describing the setting and the order of events — 2 questions for Grade 1, all on Common Core RL.1.3: Describe who, where and what happened, using details from the story. The instruction to pupils is “Read the story, then answer the questions”, and the answer key follows on the next sheet.
Which Common Core standard does Where and When It Happens practise?
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.3 — RL.1.3, in the Reading: Literature domain for Grade 1. The published standard reads: “Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.” The worksheet assesses that standard rather than a paraphrase of it.
What age or grade is this worksheet for?

Does Where and When It Happens come with an answer key?
Yes. All 2 answers are generated from the same problems as the questions, so the key cannot drift out of step with the sheet. It starts on a fresh sheet of paper, after the questions, so it is not handed out with the class by accident.
How many different versions of Where and When It Happens can I print?
25 versions, of which 23 ask genuinely different questions — this skill does not have 25 distinct questions to give, so the rest reorder them and no two pupils still share a paper. Set 1 downloads all 25 as one PDF.
Is Where and When It Happens free to print and photocopy?
Yes. Where and When It Happens, its answer key and its 25 versions are free to print and photocopy for your own class, with no account, no email capture and no subscription at the download step. Please do not resell them or republish them as your own.
