Work It Out from the Story is a free printable Grade 1 English worksheet on answering something the story does not say outright, aligned to Common Core standard RL.1.1. It prints 2 questions with an answer key on its own sheet of paper, in 25 versions, 23 of them with different questions, so no two pupils in the class work from the same page. Print it from the browser or download it as a PDF — no account, no email.
Set 24 of 25 · the same problems every time you open this link.
Set 1 has all 25 in a single PDF. 23 of these 25 sets ask different questions — this skill does not have 25 questions to give. The rest reorder them, so no two pupils have the same paper in front of them.

The Jar of Shells
Every summer, Ivy filled a jar with shells from the beach. The jar sat on her windowsill all winter.
One day her little brother knocked the jar off the sill. It did not break, but the shells rolled everywhere. Ivy felt hot and cross. Then she saw that Ben was crying.
"It was an accident," she said. "Help me find them." They crawled under the bed together. They found every shell but one.
1. Why did Ivy stop being cross?
2. Do you think Ivy was still cross at the end? How do you know?
2.Read the text, then answer the questions.
One Glove
Maya found one green glove on the wall by the bus stop. It was small, so it belonged to a child.
She could not just leave it. She pinned a note to the wall: FOUND — ONE GREEN GLOVE. ASK AT NUMBER 12.
For three days nobody came. On the fourth day a boy knocked. He had the other green glove in his hand.
1. How did Maya know the glove belonged to a child?
2. How is the note connected to the boy knocking?
