The Big Snow
A photograph description and an interview about one event, both written for this worksheet. PHOTOGRAPH: Snow is piled higher than the parked cars on Elm Street. Two children are building a snowman. A sign on the school door says CLOSED. INTERVIEW with Mrs. Grant, who was 8 at the time: "The snow started at night and did not stop for two days. Our power went out, so we cooked soup in the fireplace. School was closed all week, and I missed my friends."
- 1. Do the photograph and the interview agree that school was closed? How do you know?
- 2. What can the photograph not tell you?
- 3. How long did the snow fall, according to Mrs. Grant?
Opening Day at the New Library
A photograph description and an interview about one event, both written for this worksheet. PHOTOGRAPH: A long line of families waits outside a new brick library. A red ribbon is stretched across the door. A banner says GRAND OPENING. INTERVIEW with Mr. Lopez, a librarian: "We gave out 300 library cards that first day. Many children had never had their own card. The old library was one small room, so the new one felt huge."
- 1. Do both sources show that many people came? How do you know?
- 2. What can the photograph not tell you?
- 3. What is stretched across the door in the photograph?
