The Boston Tea Party
An information text written for this worksheet. On the night of December 16, 1773, a group of colonists, some dressed as Mohawk people, boarded three ships in Boston Harbor. They dumped 342 chests of tea belonging to the East India Company into the water. They were protesting a tax on tea passed by Parliament in London, where the colonists had no representatives. In 1774 Parliament punished Boston by closing its harbor until the tea was paid for. Other colonies sent food and supplies to help the people of Boston.
- 1. Why did the colonists dump the tea?
- 2. Whose tea was it?
- 3. What does this text not tell you about the people who dumped the tea?
Winter at Valley Forge
An information text written for this worksheet. In December 1777 George Washington's Continental Army camped for the winter at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The soldiers built more than 1,500 log huts. Many of them had no shoes, few blankets and too little food. Nearly 2,000 soldiers died that winter, most of them from disease. In February 1778 Friedrich von Steuben, an officer from Prussia, arrived and soon began drilling the soldiers to march and fight together. In June 1778 the army marched out of Valley Forge better trained than when it arrived.
- 1. What did Friedrich von Steuben do?
- 2. What evidence shows the army was stronger in June 1778?
- 3. Why did so many soldiers suffer that winter?
