Answer key — Reading a Grade 4 Story

Set 4. Prints on its own sheet.

  1. 1.1. Eleven, some six years old. 2. In pencil, in a ledger, with settlements crossed out. 3. Deliberate and private — she thinks for a week, tears out the pages, installs a card machine, and never mentions it. 4. Ending something kindly can mean saying nothing — she tore out the pages and "never told him".
  2. 2.1. Arachne claimed nobody taught her to weave, out-wove Athene in a contest, and was turned into a spider for it. 2. She cannot accept being beaten — she destroys the cloth and punishes the weaver rather than admitting it. 3. Arachne's — everyone could see it. 4. Weaving — shepherds left their flocks to watch her.
